Under the operation “Determined Guard”, started in December 1996, the US naval forces, which included surface combatants, attack submarines and maritime patrol aircraft, worked with NATO and the Western European Union to enforce UN sanctions against the former Yugoslavia.
In March 1999, the operation was built around the task force of 3 frigates and 7 minesweepers from Greece, Italy and Turkey. These forces, together with other NATO naval forces in the Mediterranean, were available for supporting the SFOR mission.
